Description: A procession of colorfully garbed angels marches single-file, each playing a different musical instrument: drum, french horn, mandolin, oboe, harp and hand bells. A royal blue border accented with different specialty stitches, metallic fiber, and gold beads surrounds the heavenly musicians.
Background Information: This design was inspired by the brightly colored mosiacs still preserved in several Byzantine churches located in the Middle East. The style of the figures, however, is definitely more Renaissance than Byzantine; I wanted to show lots of movement and vitality. There are also several devices used within the design which keep it from being stiff and formal. The variations in the positioning of the angels is one such device- Some are shown in profile, some are three-quarter view, while one is shown in a frontal view. There is a gap in the procession filled only by a wing, and there are places where the wings actually overlap the border, which lends an air of informality and creates extra interest. The border was an experiment of sorts: I kept adding decoration to the dark blue background, until finally, it seemed finished.
Stitching Comments: As my designs go, I would rate this one at medium to difficult because of the following: It is a fairly large piece, which poses challenges in itself. There are loads of quarter stitches, too, maybe more than in any of my other designs, which also means tons of backstitching. But the main reason would have to be the chart itself: the original hand-drawn chart is very difficult to read and actually *requires* enlargement before beginning to stitch. However, if you have the Christmas Collection Book, the chart is now computer-generated, and very easy to read!
