Description: A beautiful princess, accompanied by her colorful pet dragon, picks an armful of wildflowers in a meadow near her castle home. A fanciful leafy vine border accented with bead flowers surrounds the fairy tale scene.
Background Information: I designed this piece especially for inclusion in the book "Cross Stitch Myth and Magic". The challenge for me was to do a dragon design and to limit the number of colors used while designing a full scene in a convincingly "naturalistic" manner. Also, because the editors wanted a design with a "cheerful" and "sunlit" ambience, I chose (for me) brighter than normal colors. It's also an attempt to portray a dragon as a pet...and although he looks quite docile, if I was a brigand intent on causing harm, I wouldn't want to mess with the princess with this faithful watch- dragon around!!
Stitching Comments: For the stitcher who would like to stitch a dragon scene that isn't too large or too complicated, this one just might fit the bill. Colors have been somewhat limited as well, but there is still some floss blending. I intentionally used fewer fractional stitches and less backstitching than usual as well. The addition of a few beads in the border should add a bit of variety. Since the colors are bright and cheerful, this design would be very nice as a special gift for a child who loves dragons and fairy tales!
